  • Hang on launch on Mac OS X El Capitan

i've been using spine on my mac for some time now. last week i upgraded to el capitan (10.11). since then, i have trouble opening spine.

steps to reproduce:

  1. launch spine
  2. splash screen opens, as expected. "loading" progress bar goes up to 100%
  3. splash screen goes away. spine window never opens. spine app becomes unresponsive and has to be force quit.

as per your troubleshooting tips, i tried this:

  1. delete ~/Library/Application Support/Spine folder
  2. launch spine
  3. splash screen opens, as expected. spine downloads, then "loading" progress bar goes up to 100%
  4. spine window appears, with spineboy project, as expected

good, right? but wait.

  1. quit spine.
  2. launch spine.
  3. splash screen opens, as expected. "loading" progress bar goes up to 100%
  4. splash screen goes away. spine window never opens. spine app becomes unresponsive and has to be force quit.

so it seems that i can only launch spine once, unless i delete the library folder and redownload spine every launch 🙁

i've attached spine.log with my personal information removed. thank you!

Very strange. We will have to get El Capitan and see if we can get the same behavior.

There really shouldn't be much difference on the second run. The two big differences are 1) that it's using the prefs.json file from the first run, and 2) that it using the update file downloaded from the first run. Neither of those should result in the app being launched differently, so I'm at a loss. Could you try deleting only the updates folder OR only the prefs.json file on the second run?

if i delete just the updates folder, Spine launches normally.
if i delete just prefs.json, Spine hangs.

however, it looks like i should do more troubleshooting on my end, because if i restart in safe mode, spine launches normally on every launch. so i must have some sort of conflict with something i have installed 🙁

thanks for the help!

EDIT: found the culprit. it's karabiner. looking at the source (it's open source on github), it looks like it's not compatible with java apps, and tries to detect this (including special case checks for a variety of applications, including eclipse, jetbrains, etc). i'll notify the developer (and maybe fix it myself). thanks again for the help, sorry to have wasted your time!

Great that you figured out the cause! It's too bad there are a few apps that have problems like this on OS X. It's not easy to track down!

update for anyone curious: this has been fixed in Karabiner 10.10.2 beta 🙂

Sweet! thanks for the update 😃

Hey there! Just downloaded Spine Pro. Super excited to use it! Having this problem though, and I don't even know what Karabiner is so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue.

To reproduce on OSX El Capitan 10.11.2 :
Open Spine
Wait...
Get spinning beachball
Application not responding
Force Quit

Tried deleting the items suggested above and restarting with no luck. Any other suggestions to fix this problem?

EDIT: NVM. Did some digging and found out that rescue time was the culprit (found it in your FAQ/support)! Thanks! Pumped to use it.

Great, glad you got it sorted! We've tested on El Capitan so I was very sad and confused for a moment. :whew:
