The button in bone properties with the colored bone icon selects all the bones of that color.
The button in the constraint properties with the white bone icon selects all the bones for the selected constraints. It doesn't use bone color at all.
You can use the page up and page down keys on your keyboard to navigate through your selection history. This allows you to easily get back to a recent selection and may help, depending on what you need to do.
